Built-in appliances fill today's high-end kitchens, in which seamless integration with cabinetry can pose technical challenges related to airflow restriction in a machine's compartment. This problem is exacerbated by dirt accumulation on the condenser (heat exchanger), which can affect appliance performance.

Experimental evaluation of dirt accumulation on condensers is time-consuming and expensive. Consequently, Sub-Zero is coupling Ansys Fluent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and Ansys Rocky discrete element modeling (DEM) to quickly gain insight on the mechanisms behind dirt accumulation in an effort to design a more robust heat exchanger.

New Coupling Features

-Rocky now has a 2-Way Thermal Coupling with Ansys Mechanical through System Coupling.

Performance Improvements

-Simulation performance for models that require extensive particle sorting was improved for GPU simulations.

-Simulation performance for geometries with large triangle count was improved for GPU simulations.

New Particles Feature

-The ability to add flexible fibers and flexible shells as particle assembly parts was added as a Beta feature.

New SPH Features

-The ability to set wall boundary condition per wall was added.

-The interaction between Coarse-Grained DEM particles and SPH elements was implemented.

-The ability to calculate the Heat Transfer Coefficient (HTC) on walls was added.

New API:Solver Features

-The ability to build custom viscosity modules was added.

-The ability to freeze SPH elements was added.

Post-processing Improvements

-The ability of selecting properties that will be saved in disk was implemented. For post-processing outputs, the user selected data will be -saved in disk and for resume data outputs, which are supposed to be less frequent, all the data will be saved in disk.

-The wear volume loss calculated by the wear algorithm was added as a triangle property.

Usability Improvements

-New User Interface look and feel was created.

-The dark theme has become the default one.

-An option to invert the normals of surface geometries was created.

-The ability to set transparency for Particles entity in the 3D view was added.

-The wheel mouse controls were standardized with other Ansys products.

-The ability to reload CFD Coupling files was added for both Fluent 1-way and 2-way coupling methods.

-The terminology related to output frequencies was updated.

-The ability to duplicate 3D views was added.

-The ability to save custom properties and curves in the Project scope was added.

Documentation Improvements

-User Manual, DEM Technical Manual, CFD Coupling Technical Manual, SPH Technical Manual, and Verification and Validation Manual, are now in Ansys Help.

All module documentation has been added into a single manual, Module Manual, that is also in Ansys Help.

Bug Fixes

-The problem where Rocky windows installation would create a wrong shortcut to the Ansys License Client Settings was fixed.

-The error caused by the usage of Grace drag model in Fluent during a 2-way coupling was fixed.

-The crash caused by the collision of a single concave particle with a wall before other particles were injected in the domain was fixed.

-The problem in which the orientation set in a geometry was not being considered in the volumetric inlet fill algorithm was fixed.

-The problem that was preventing Rocky to import .cas .h5 files as geometries was fixed.

-The problem that was preventing saving for restart in a 2-Way Coupled simulation with moving mesh was fixed.

-The problem in which a simulation with Radl. et al model would lead to wrong mixing efficiency results was fixed.

-The problem that was leading to wrong statistics caused by the combination of discrete breakage and Joint statistics was fixed.
